EOLONM’s 2023 Annual Report

Our year in review

Dear Friends,

2023 Annual Report

Reflecting on our journey at End-of-Life Options New Mexico (EOLONM) this past year, I am filled with gratitude for the progress we’ve achieved. It’s been an honor to witness the dedication and compassion that define our organization, and I extend heartfelt appreciation to all who’ve contributed to our mission.

Special thanks to our founding board members MaryKay Brady, Jill Von Osten and Barak Wolff, whose vision paved the way for our establishment, and to former board members Erika Gergerich and Poem Swentzell, as well as former administrator Robin Swift for their invaluable contributions. Our growth has been significant, with an expanded board, the hiring of Julia Bergen as our first full-time executive director, and of Viki Teahan as our warmline dispatcher.

At the core of our mission is the belief that everyone deserves dignity, respect, and compassion in their end-of-life planning and care. Critical to our achievements are our dedicated volunteers who embody compassion and care in every action. Whether providing emotional support to individuals and families, advocating for policy change, or promoting greater education, awareness and understanding, the EOLONM team remains steadfast in our commitment to embracing the full spectrum of advance healthcare planning and end-of-life options for all New Mexicans.

Since the enactment of the Elizabeth Whitefield End-of-Life Options Act in June 2021, EOLONM has been instrumental in providing end-of-life options information and care. The number of New Mexicans availing medical aid in dying—now exceeding 500—underscores the importance of the Act to provide the terminally ill a means to end their suffering with dignity, care, and compassion. Under the leadership of Nancy Abell, Chair of our Clinical Outreach and Education Committee, EOLONM‘s strategic partnerships and advocacy efforts have fostered a climate where health care providers, hospices and state agencies increasingly embrace end-of-life options.

Looking forward, we are aware of the challenges in ensuring fair access to our services across the state. Our goal is to provide accurate information and support for all New Mexicans in their end-of-life planning.

In closing, I extend deep gratitude for your unwavering support of End-of-Life Options New Mexico. Together, we shape the future of end-of-life care, embodying the values of compassion, dignity, and respect. Debbie Armstrong
