Santa Fe Doorways – Monthly Meeting Notice

March 14 @ 11:45 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Thursday, March 14, 11:45 AM – 1:00 PM

“Assisted Dying: A 30,000 Ft. Global Overview and a Deep Dive
into MAID here in NM”

Presenters: Barak Wolff and Sherry Burns

Long time Doorways participant, Barak Wolff, will be joined by Sherry Burns, an end-of-life doula and active Client Support Volunteer with End of Life Options NM (EOLONM), for this presentation and discussion session.  Barak and Sherry will briefly set the stage by providing a brief overview of developments internationally and in the US. Increasingly, many countries and states are engaging in discussions about patients’ right to self-determination and making personal healthcare decisions, balanced with political and ethical concerns about protecting vulnerable populations and religious concerns about hastening death, regardless of suffering.

Barak will then provide an update on the implementation of NM’s Elizabeth Whitefield End-of-Life Options Act which will be three years old in June. Barak will review the progress of EOLONM statewide in supporting well trained volunteers to provide education and outreach about advance care planning and individual client support volunteers for those who request assistance with their end-of-life choices, including medical aid in dying (MAID). Sherry will then provide a brief reminder about the work of end-of-life doulas before discussing how MAID can be requested and accessed here in the Santa Fe area. Sherry, who has been at the bedside for numerous “ingestions” where end-of-life medications have been used, will describe the MAID process and share some of her experiences. Ample time will be reserved for Q&A and discussion.
